The Total Environment Centre (TEC) is one of Australia’s leading environmental advocacy group. For over 45 years, TEC has been working to protect our natural and urban environment, advising the community, undertaking research and education, changing government policy, and challenging business. Amongst our long running campaigns is working to drastically reduce plastic pollution through advocacy and education, including the Ocean Action Pod, a travelling interactive exhibit that has visited many schools and community events.

Be part of the solution!

Want to be involved in something positive, exciting and creative? This is an opportunity with TEC’s dynamic public and school engagement program the Ocean Action Pod to help raise awareness of ocean plastic pollution issues. The Ocean Action Pod is a funky mobile exhibition with props and educational activities creating action for our oceans. Its playful approach and positive messaging attracts both children and adults eager to take on board effective solutions which prioritise the health of our waterways. The Pod is super family-friendly and its colourful, interactive and creative displays are key features to engaging hearts and minds in a memorable way.

This is also a unique opportunity for pre- and in-service teachers to facilitate learning with students outside the usual classroom setting; or those interested in a career in communications. We are offering you experience which will prove to future employers your passion and skills directly related to your chosen career.

  • Operate the Ocean Action Pod in communities (beaches, festivals, etc.)

    • Present and explain the Pod displays

    • Engage actively and energetically with the public

    • Contribute to evaluations and reporting

  • Work with the Pod team to deliver our schools program (K-6)

    • Lead workshops to facilitate students’ understanding of the problems associated with and the solutions to plastic pollution

    • Support other Educators where necessary to enhance learning

  • Represent the Total Environmental Centre and our campaigns

  • Follow WHS procedure at all times

  • Social media updates at community events

You need to have great interpersonal skills and be fluent in English. We are looking for passionate energetic individuals with strong leadership and communication skills who are excited about proactively talking to members of the public and engaging thousands of school children around Sydney! You also need to be a hands-on person who is physically able-bodied (the job involves a fair amount of manual handling for setup). All applicants must have a working with children check (easily obtained through Service NSW for an admin fee).

The Ocean Action Pod operates mostly in the Sydney region, Hunter and Central Coast and the Illawarra. We are currently building our pool of casual staff and aim to have a few people in each region. There may also be future opportunities to travel further afield with the Pod.
